Music and Instrumental

Hindustani Classical Vocal

Hindustani Music was initially a form of meditation, prescribed in ancient Hindu scriptures. It has evolved since, into one of the most intense, enthralling and complete musical systems ever developed. It is based upon Ragas and Taals, each designed to affect the different Chakras (energy centers) that reside within the human body.

Carnatic Classical Vocal

Age group: 5 years and up

Carnatic music is a system of music commonly associated with the southern part of the Indian subcontinent and  is considered one of the oldest systems of music in the world. It is a very complex system of music that requires much thought, both artistically and technically.  The most important specialty of Carnatic music is its highly devotional element.

Harmonium and Indian Classical Keyboards

Age group: 8 years and up

The harmonium is also known as peti or baja. It is a reed organ with hand pumped bellows. Although this is a European invention, it has evolved into a truly bi-cultural instrument.  The keyboard is European, but it has a number of drone reeds which are particularly Indian. Today, it is used in virtually every musical genre except the south Indian classical.

Sitar

Age group: 7 years and up

The sitar is a plucked string instrument common to Classical Indian music, particularly in the Hindustani (northern Indian) classical traditions. One of its most popular exponents is Pandit Ravi Shankar, who jammed with the Beatles, thus introducing the wonders of the melodious sitar to the Western World.

Tabla

Age group: 5 years and up

Very popular with young boys and girls, the tabla occupies a place of pride amongst Indian Musical Instruments. The energetic beats of the tabla have a unique ability to transform any kind of music and give it a completely new dimension. It is the ideal accompaniment, and an inseparable part of North India Classical Music (Hindustani Music) including the religious and popular music forms.

Guitar

This popular string instrument adapts readily to a wide variety of music styles. The two main types of guitars are the electric guitar and the acoustic guitar (of which the three main types are the classical guitar, the steel string flattop guitar and the arch-top guitar).
